
The controversy regarding Bombay vs Mumbai has increased in Maharashtra. Under which, on Saturday, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers blackened the sign of Bombay at Churchgate Cafe and warned to change the name immediately. After Union Minister Jitendra Singh’s recent statement on IIT-Bombay, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena expressed its displeasure and demanded to change the name of Bombay Burger at Churchgate station in South Mumbai.
According to the information, today UBT Shiv Sainiks went to the burger shop and created ruckus and raised slogans, demanding to change the name of the famous food joint “Bombay Burger” to “Mumbai Burger” inside the Churchgate Railway Station of South Mumbai. During this, Shiv Sena workers blackened the burger board and name plate. After which the franchisee of this Bombay Burger covered the word Bombay with black plastic wherever it was written.
‘Otherwise we will get it changed in our own way…’
UBT Shiv Sainiks objected to the continued use of the word Bombay. He said that the city should be called only Mumbai. Shiv Sena (UBT) warned that if the name was not changed immediately, they would get it changed in their own way. During this time there was a lot of chaos at the spot. The workers raised slogans during the protest.

Meanwhile, the employees of Bombay Burger said that Shiv Sena workers warned them, they did not lodge any memorandum or written complaint nor did they beat up the employees. Employees said that UBT Shiv Sainiks have said that the name of the cafe should be changed.

Whereas the customers of Bombay Burger are mostly the young generation. He said he doesn’t care much about the name. The youth said that taste is more important for them. However, during this time, some people said that the name Bombay was correct, while many people favored the name Mumbai.
Statement of Minister Jitendra Singh
In fact, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh had recently asked why the institute is called IIT Bombay despite the official name of the city being changed to Mumbai decades ago. He had said that as far as IIT Bombay is concerned, thankfully its name still remains the same and this name (IIT) is also right for Madras. It will remain IIT Madras only. After his statement, the debate regarding identity, naming and use of Bombay in public institutions started again.
