Kharmas 2025: Auspicious works are stopped during Kharmas, why are 30 days considered inauspicious?

December 2, 2025 by Uma Shankar

Kharmas 2025 Date: In Hinduism, Sun God is considered the king of the nine planets and the lord of the soul. According to astrological calculations, every month the Sun God enters from one zodiac sign to another, which is called ‘Sankranti’. Twice a year, when the Sun God enters Jupiter’s zodiac signs Sagittarius and Pisces, that 30-day period is called ‘Kharmas’ or ‘Malmas’, and during this time all auspicious works are stopped. Let us know why Kharmas is considered prohibited for auspicious works due to both astrological and mythological reasons.

Why is it considered Kharmas Is it inauspicious?

Astrological reasons (reduction in influence of Sun)

Zodiac signs of Jupiter: The lord of Sagittarius and Pisces is Jupiter, who is the factor of religion and auspiciousness. When the Sun (King) enters the sign of its Jupiter, in a way it goes into a state of “rest”.

Dimension of brightness: When the Sun is in Sagittarius and Pisces, its brightness and strength reduces. To accomplish any auspicious work, the full strength and brilliance of the Sun is required. Due to weak Sun, there is lack of success and auspiciousness in the work done.

Effect of Jupiter-Sun: Due to the influence of Jupiter, this time is good for self-purification, contemplation and religious rituals, but is not considered favorable for material pleasures or the beginning of new relationships (like marriage).

Mythology (Lord Surya and Chariot of Khar)

According to an ancient story, Lord Surya continuously revolves around the universe riding on his chariot with seven horses. If they stop, life in the world will stop. Once, due to continuous walking, his horses became very tired and became thirsty. Surya Dev had to give rest to the horses, but was forbidden to stop. Then Surya Dev yoked two donkeys (Khar) standing on the bank of the pond to his chariot and left the horses to rest.

The donkeys were not used to pulling the chariot, so their speed became very slow, and they were able to pull the chariot with great difficulty. During this period, the speed of Surya’s chariot slowed down and his speed also decreased. Therefore, every year when the Sun enters the zodiac signs of Jupiter, that period is called Malmas (Kharmas), in which auspicious works are prohibited due to the slow movement of the Sun.

Prohibited work in Kharmas

According to astrology, one should avoid doing these things during Kharmas. This is the beginning of a new relationship. Both material and spiritual happiness is desired in marriage, which may remain incomplete due to the weak strength of the Sun during this period. One should avoid entering a new house or starting its construction.

Mundan/Karnavedha: No auspicious rites related to children should be performed.

Start of new business/work: Starting any big investment or new business is not considered auspicious.

Honor of Gods: No new temple or idol should be established.

What should be done in Kharmas?

Although auspicious activities are stopped during Kharmas, this time is considered very good for religious and spiritual activities.

Worship: Worshiping Lord Vishnu, Guru Brihaspati and Sun God is extremely beneficial.

Donation: During this entire month, poor and needy people should donate yellow clothes, grains, jaggery, wheat, ghee and sesame seeds.

Chanting and penance: This time is best for self-purification and meditation. Chanting the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya’ is fruitful.

Holy Bath: Bathing in holy rivers frees one from all sins.

Arghya to the Sun: Every day, offer Arghya to the Sun God by adding red sandalwood and red flowers in water.
