Jaya Bachchan: I am also the daughter of a writer-journalist… What wrong did Jaya Bachchan say about paparazzi?

December 1, 2025 by Uma Shankar

Actress and MP Jaya Bachchan’s dispute with paparazzi is not new. When there are taunting campaigns against Jaya Bachchan on social media, Jaya also says to stay away from social media. The latest controversy is regarding one of his interviews. A new debate has started on the kind of statements he has given regarding paparazzi in this interview. In a conversation with senior journalist Barkha Dutt, she said that I am also a journalist’s daughter… My father was also a writer but this social media and paparazzi are very strange. Don’t know where these people come from, what kind of background they have, who do not care about anyone’s dignity.

Now Jaya Bachchan After this statement, attacks on him have started once again. A new discussion has erupted on social media. Social media users are calling paparazzi culture an essential part of the media ecosystem. Some filmmakers have also raised questions. One of them is director Ashok Pandit. Ashok Pandit said that it is not appropriate to question the coverage style of paparazzi and the independence of their work. He also said that paparazzi are hardworking professionals, they do their job, act as a bridge between the stars and their PR team.

“Paparazzi cross the limits”

But do paparazzi follow any kind of limits? This question is equally important. Creating viral content, attracting maximum attention of users and growing their platform is the principle of paparazzi profession. You can go to all the social media platforms like Facebook, X, Linkedin or Instagram etc. and see how the videos of celebrities are edited and shared. They are presented in a more inflammatory and provocative manner. Of course, covering events is an essential part of the paparazzi’s work, but how justified can the photo-video of objectionable situations and its sensational treatment be?

“Social media is not serious”

The campaign against Jaya Bachchan on social media is old. The latest controversy has flared up again. Actually, Jaya Bachchan has been an advocate of discipline on public forums. It has been seen many times in the past that if someone tried to get a photo clicked with her or wanted to talk to her, she got angry. Jaya wants to maintain the decorum of formality in public meetings. We should understand that celebrities have their own thinking and style. Every celebrity cannot be judged on the same temperament. Jaya Bachchan said that I remain indifferent to the hatred spread against me on social media. The views of the people there are their own, neither do I take them seriously nor am I influenced by them. This is why I am not on social media.

“These are very strange people.”

In her most recent interview, Jaya Bachchan said about paparazzi that it is very strange. This is very strange. However, he has also praised the media a lot. He said that his relations with the media have been excellent. He also called himself a product of the media but as far as paparazzi are concerned, we have zero relations with them. Jaya got angry at the work of paparazzi and asked who are these people? Do they represent the country? I also have connections with the media. My father was a writer, I am the daughter of a journalist. I respect my media colleagues a lot. But these strange and poorly dressed people are standing outside and busy only in taking photos with their mobile phones. After all, what do they want? What kind of education have they received, what kind of background do they have?

However, raising questions on the education, dress and background of the paparazzi cannot be justified. This could be an issue related to the personal status of the paparazzi. Please note that paparazzi culture is not new in the film industry. The work that is done in media through gossips is almost the same work done by paparazzi, only here they also have some photos and videos. Just as gossips are a great means of publicity, similarly the work of paparazzi is also there. This is the reason why today a large group of the industry wants to get their coverage done by paparazzi.

Understand the need for paparazzi

After the boom of digital platforms, the scope of work of paparazzi has increased even further. Many times, the kind of publicity that is not possible through institutional media is achieved through the digital platforms of paparazzi. Sometimes some stars even want this. There are some contents which require immediate publicity, for which paparazzi are required. The more million followers a paparazzi has, the more influence he has. On any special occasion, stars regularly call such paparazzi and get their products or up-scaling projects promoted.

Celebrity permission for photo

A PR company is also hired to call the paparazzi. But at the same time, such incidents are also seen which are beyond the limits. Paparazzi keep an eye out for such moments which are likely to go viral. Many times this even crosses the limits of morality. In such a situation, the artists who are a little strong and serious do not like this kind of posting and sharing. Jaya Bachchan is also such a grand personality. She is an actress, and also a Rajya Sabha MP. If they don’t like this culture or want to maintain a decorum then why should it be violated? The law says that photographs should be taken only after taking permission from the celebrity.

In this conversation, Jaya Bachchan said in clear words that those people not only take such photos but also make strange comments on them. After all, what kind of people are these? Where do these come from? Certainly they do not represent us. I don’t watch social media much. During this time, a question also came that when the stars call the paparazzi to pose at the airport, what is their fault? Jaya Bachchan gave a blunt answer to this – If you have to call paparazzi at the airport, then you will have to think about what kind of celebrity you are.

Who was Jaya Bachchan’s father?
