After the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government last year, elections were announced for the first time in Bangladesh on 12 February. Along with this, BNP has been living a life of exile for 17 years before the elections. The return of Acting Chairman Tariq Rehman was announced on 25 December. With this announcement, youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi was murdered and even after a week of the murder no one has been arrested yet.
First the BNP supporters were accused of murder and then the student organization of the Awami League and before the elections, Bangladesh is again burning in the fire of violence. Anti-India voices are being fanned and Indian establishments are being targeted.
bangladesh The reason behind the violence is believed to be the fear of Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami is afraid of BNP and Awami League. Despite Sheikh Hasina’s coup and legal action, Awami League supporters could not be marginalized yet, although the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, took several tough decisions against Awami League supporters including Sheikh Hasina. The recognition of the party was cancelled.
Awami League supporters are in high spirits
The court announced death sentence to Sheikh Hasina, but the enthusiasm of the supporters is high. At the same time, Tariq Rahman’s return to Bangladesh has once again infused new life into the supporters of BNP.
Last year, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government was toppled after violent protests in Bangladesh. Its objective was to form an Islamic government with the help of Jamaat-e-Islami and hand over the keys of power to Jamaat-e-Islami.
Jamaat-e-Islami was recognized after the formation of the government under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus. During the interim government of Yunus, prominent persons of Jamaat-e-Islami were appointed from administration to army and educational institutions, so that the power of Jamaat-e-Islami could be used. Elections were announced and with it the return of Tariq Rahman was announced and Hadi was assassinated.
Hadi’s assassination incited fundamentalist forces
Hadi was the chairman of Inquilab Manch and had a limited role in the movement to oust Hasina’s government. He had filed nomination against senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas in Dhaka. However, electorally he was not considered a major challenge. In such a situation, questions are being raised regarding his murder. On Saturday, Hadi’s body was laid to rest near the grave of national poet Nazrul Islam on the Dhaka University campus. Mohammad Yunus himself was present on this occasion. Questions are also being raised regarding the burial of Hadi’s body near national poet Nazrul. The question being raised is what message does Yunus want to give?
Senior political analyst Partha Mukhopadhyay says that it has been seven-eight days since Hadi was murdered. No accused has been arrested yet. It is being said that he has fled the country, but after the assassination of Hadi, the atrocities on minorities increased. Dipu Das was beaten to death. Earlier the population of Hindus in Bangladesh was eight percent and now it has come down to two percent. In such a situation, this violence will further increase the migration of minorities from Bangladesh and it has worked to unite Muslim fundamentalist forces and fueled the anti-India movement. The way Yunus is supporting the dominant supporters. Questions are also being raised about his intentions.
Who is afraid of Rahman’s return?
At the same time, in this background, the return of Tariq Rehman is considered important. His return can bring new energy to BNP and boost the morale of the party cadre. BNP may try to harness nationalist sentiments with the help of its founder Ziaur Rahman’s legacy related to the 1971 liberation war. This is the possibility which is being said to be against the interests of Mohammad Yunus and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Partha Mukhopadhyay says that Hadi’s assassination and the subsequent violence were used to stop this nationalist rise and maintain Islamic polarization. This murder has taken place in the background of the announcement of Tariq Rahman’s return to Bangladesh, which shows the fear of Mohammad Yunus and Jamaat-e-Islami, because despite the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina, Awami League supporters have not been able to be sidelined yet and with the return of Tariq Rahman, BNP will emerge as a big force, which is not in the interest of a party like Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-e-Islami wants that the country The environment should be unstable, so that elections in Bangladesh can be postponed.
Hadi’s murder: internal conspiracy
On the other hand, quoting information related to police investigation, it is also being said that there are indications that the murder was committed by someone close to him. On this basis, in some political circles it is being termed as an internal conspiracy, the purpose of which was to present the violence that emerged after the murder as a spontaneous reaction.
It is being said in these claims that this incident encouraged Islamic polarization and youth organizations associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and Yunus got an opportunity to take to the streets. A large number of radicalized youth took to the streets. During this period, there were also attacks on Indian diplomatic posts in Bangladesh, which some analysts are considering as part of a planned conspiracy.
