Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh. With this, on Thursday he was sentenced to 21 years in jail in corruption cases. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed Joy is questioning the leadership of the party and whether Hasina should apologize for the deaths in the country or not. A big statement has come out regarding these. Sajeeb Wazed Joy said in an interview to BBC Bangla, a game is being played from outside (foreign) to change the leadership of both the parties (BNP and Awami League).
Awami League has been banned in the country. Wajed was questioned about the leadership of the party. He was asked who would take charge of the party after Sheikh Hasina. On this he said, no member of his family is going to directly take over the leadership of the party. When he was asked whether he wanted to lead the party in the absence of his mother Sheikh Hasina or after her, he said that only the party would take the final decision in this regard.
What did you say about the party’s vote bank?
Wajed said, we are a democratic party. The party will decide who will be the future leader. Neither I nor anyone else can impose this. He also described Awami League and BNP as the two main parties of the country and said that these two parties have a definite vote bank which no other party has. He also said that if there is a change of power in Bangladesh, then one of these two parties will come back to power. He also said that right now the leadership of the party is in the hands of my mother.
How will Sheikh Hasina return?
Sheikh Hasina is currently leading the party from India. But, there is neither any possibility nor any discussion regarding change of leadership. Awami League also believes that there is no environment in the country to hand over responsibility to someone else.
Sajeeb Wajed said, the party leadership is still present. My mother is the president of the party. He has full support of party leaders and workers. No one has left him. Yes, they are scattered, but they are united. Therefore the leadership of the party is still intact. Our party is completely united.
Will Wazed lead the party?
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who is currently actively working abroad on behalf of Awami League, was asked by BBC Bangla whether he will lead the party, he said that it will not be his decision, the party will decide. He also said, however, many things can happen in the future depending on the circumstances.
Will the daughter take over the leadership?
On the discussions about Saima Wajed Putul coming under the leadership, he said that this perception is far from reality. He said, my sister is not interested in joining politics.
What did you say about the case?
Recently Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to 21 years in jail in three corruption cases. Besides, his son Sajeeb Wajed Joy and daughter Saima Wajed Putul have also been given 5-5 years in jail. After this Wajed said, false cases are being filed against us so that we can be held guilty and we cannot vote. That’s the main objective – that none of us should be able to vote.
Will Awami League apologize?
BBC Bangla asked Wajed that there has been criticism regarding the deaths in the protest in July last year that Awami League has no regrets about it. Will Awami League apologize to the nation for the July killings? Responding to this question, Wajed said, “Will he give up everything if he apologizes? But yes, the Awami League government made mistakes during the July movement. We have always been saying this. There were mistakes in the beginning of the movement. There were mistakes later also. There should be a clear inquiry into it.”
Wazed said, “My mother was the Prime Minister at that time. She had already formed a judicial commission to investigate all the killings before August 5. Because the killings were not just of students or the general public — Awami League leaders and workers were also killed. There should be a clear investigation as to who was responsible for this.”
He also said, “Yes, it was a mistake. But, if we have to take a decision from there, then we have to apologise. The Yunus government has pardoned all the killings that took place from August 5 to August 15. With one hand you are saying that the Awami League should apologize and with the other hand you are saying that the killings by the police and the killings of Awami League leaders and workers—all were forgiven. How can this happen? If so If so, what would be the meaning of Awami League’s apology?
