The political atmosphere has started to develop for the Punjab elections to be held in 2027. Former Chief Minister of Punjab and BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh has once again started a discussion on the possibilities of alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party. He said that it is difficult to win alone in 2027.
During a podcast of a media house, Amarinder Singh said that BJP cannot win the 2027 assembly elections alone and to return to power, it will have to revive its alliance with Akali Dal. Let us inform that SAD had broken its 27-year-long alliance with BJP after the passing of three agricultural laws in September 2020, but with this statement of Amarinder Gill, the alliance was once again resolved.
Why is it difficult for BJP to contest elections alone?
On the question of BJP’s situation in Punjab, Amarinder Singh said that the party does not understand the state well and is unable to build a strong organizational base alone. He made it clear that only an alliance with SAD can provide the necessary work force and grassroots network, otherwise it will take two to three elections for BJP to build its own base. “There is no other way to form the government without an alliance with the Akali Dal,” he stressed.
Voices of alliance are being raised even within BJP
These statements of Amarinder Singh have come at a time when similar things are coming to the fore under the BJP leadership of Punjab. In March 2024, state BJP president Sunil Jakhar had admitted that the SAD-BJP alliance reflected the public sentiment. In July 2025, he went a step further and said that reunification with SAD is necessary for political stability in Punjab. Party sources say that after the continuous defeat in the recent by-elections, there is a demand from the grassroots level to discuss the alliance once again.
