Gustaakh Ishq Review: ‘Gustaakh Ishq’ brought back the old era of cinema, but will the slow-motion drama win your heart? read review

November 28, 2025 by Uma Shankar

Gustaakh Ishq Review In Hindi: In today’s era, when only films with ‘dishoom-dishoom’ and big special effects are making noise in the theatres, Vibhu Puri’s ‘Gustakh Ishq’, released today i.e. on 28th November, feels like a calm, relaxing breath. This film reminds us of that era when films were slow-paced but heart-touching. ‘Gustak Ishq’ also doesn’t ask you to rush. It says, “Stop! Sit! Feel this story.”

Now does the silence of ‘Gustak Ishq’ increase the heartbeats, or does it bore you? Read the review of Gustakh Ishq to know whether to watch this movie or not.

Story

The story of the film is of Nawabuddin (Vijay Verma), who is trying to revive his late father Jaan’s closed printing press. In pursuit of this passion, he comes to know about the one thing that can make him famous, that thing is the poetry of the famous poet Aziz Baig (Naseeruddin Shah) which could never be published.

Aziz Baig is an intelligent but turned away from the world poet, who likes to stay away from name and fame. He is living a quiet life with his daughter Minnie (Fatima Sana Shaikh). Nawabuddin goes to Aziz for the revival of the printing press. He makes the excuse that he wants to learn poetry from him, but his real intention is to publish a book of his poetry. Minnie also encourages Nawabuddin and tries to get her father to give up his stubbornness. But Aziz Baig does not move from his place. Now will they be able to convince them, amidst all this, what turn will the story of Minnie and Nawabuddin take? To know this you will have to go to the theater and watch ‘Gustak Ishq’.

How is the movie?

The biggest strength of ‘Gustak Ishq’ is its slow pace. Every frame of the film is like a painting. Its whisper-like dialogues force you to live in those beautiful moments. The soft morning sunlight falling on the old mansion, the letters that have turned yellow with time, and the poetry hummed while sipping tea, all these things awaken an old, forgotten nostalgia hidden in our hearts. The music and background score of the film is amazing. Without making any noise, it maintains a deep sad feeling throughout the story. The special thing is that it does not dominate the narrative of the story at any place, rather it gives it more depth.

But at some places this slowness starts getting a bit boring. This means that the film which was supposed to be heart-wrenching, remains merely ‘decent’ and ‘shy’, and yes, one more thing, this film will definitely test the patience of its Gen-G audience.

acting

The soul of ‘Gustak Ishq’ is its actors, when Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Verma come together on screen, we forget everything. Naseeruddin Shah has given his entire life in the role of a lonely poet. There is sadness in his eyes, years of experience on his face, and there is tremendous intensity in his calmness. Vijay Verma is tremendous as always, but this time he has presented his character with utmost calmness and poise. Fatima’s character Minnie is very important to the story, but sadly she doesn’t have much to do. His presence takes the story forward, but there was nothing special or different in his acting. The romance between Nawabuddin and Minnie seems cute but not memorable. I remember only the scenes of Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Verma.

Direction and Production

Vibhu Puri’s direction is stylish. He knows what kind of world he wants to create, and he executes every shot very well. In an interview given to TV9 Hindi Digital, when we asked him whether it is challenging to present the world of poetry in front of the camera? Then he replied that he knows how to do it only here. And this is right too, because they have presented such a beautiful world in front of us, in which we get lost and do not feel like coming out of it. Despite the flaws, one feels like watching this film again and again, because such cinema is not made anymore.

Famous fashion designer Manish Malhotra has debuted as a producer with this film. He deserves praise for producing such a film and if it is his film then the sets and costumes are sure to be amazing.

To watch or not to watch?

If you are bored of fast-paced films and want to watch a slow, moving film like a poem or shayari, then this film is for you. The experience of watching Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Verma together is amazing, their jugalbandhi is relaxing. The film also satisfies the eyes due to Manish Malhotra’s production value. But if you want a twist every 10 minutes or want the story to move forward quickly, then this film may test your patience.

In terms of emotions, we are not able to connect with it at many places, so if you want to watch emotional scenes that get applause, then you might be a little disappointed. But this is a film that even after it ends, leaves some small, soft moments with you, maybe a line of poetry, or a look seen in a scene, or a tune that lingers in the background. So if you want to see something good and different, then definitely watch this film. But in the end they will just say, “I wish she had been a little more cheeky.”
