Congress on Monday rejected the Department of Telecommunications’ directive to pre-presuppose Sanchar Sathi app in new mobile handsets, terming it unconstitutional and demanded its immediate withdrawal. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the right to privacy is an integral part of the fundamental right to life and liberty.
He wrote on social media platform X, Big Brother cannot keep an eye on us. This instruction of the Department of Telecommunications is unconstitutional. The right to privacy is an integral part of the fundamental right to life and liberty enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution.
A tool to keep an eye on every Indian
Venugopal said that the already existing government app, which cannot be removed, is an oppressive tool to keep an eye on every Indian. It is a means of monitoring every activity, conversation and decision of every citizen. He alleged that this step is part of a long series of attacks on the constitutional rights of Indian citizens, which cannot be allowed to continue.
Demand to immediately withdraw the decision
The Congress leader said that we oppose this instruction and demand its immediate withdrawal. The Department of Telecommunications has directed mobile handset manufacturers and importers to ensure that all new devices should be pre-installed with the fraud reporting app Sanchar Saathi.
