Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia’s condition critical, preparations to take her to London, what disease is she suffering from?

The health of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) Chairperson Khaleda Zia has once again deteriorated. Khaleda Zia, admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, was brought to emergency this time due to severe lung and heart infection. Now information is being received that his family has started full preparations to take him to London for treatment. Just waiting for the green signal from the medical board.

According to the BNP chief’s family and party sources, plans are being made to admit Khaleda Zia in the same London hospital where she was treated in January this year. The doctors of the Medical Board formed for his treatment are in constant touch with the specialist doctors of London. Besides, talks have also been held with the Qatar government for arranging air ambulance.

Serious infection of lungs and heart, condition critical

Khaleda Zia was brought to the hospital on Sunday due to difficulty in breathing. According to the information, he has serious infection in his lungs and heart. The condition is critical but at present it is said to be stable.

Chief Advisor to the interim government, Mohammad Yunus has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of Khaleda Zia. He has also appealed to the people to pray for Jiya’s speedy recovery. The Advisory Council of the Interim Government held a special meeting on Saturday and prayed for Khaleda Zia. President Mohammad Shahabuddin has also expressed deep concern over his deteriorating condition.

Struggling with serious illnesses for many years

Khaleda Zia has been fighting many chronic diseases for a long time.

  • He also had Covid in 2021, after which his health continued to deteriorate.

From release to current crisis, the journey at a glance

Khaleda Zia has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh twice, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. She is the wife of former President Zia-ur-Rehman. Rahman was assassinated on 30 May 1981. After the death of her husband, the BNP party started disintegrating and the party leaders convinced Khaleda to take over the leadership. Initially she was not ready, but in 1984 she took command of the party.

Khaleda Zia was in jail after her conviction in a corruption case in 2018. Later, due to health reasons, he was sent home on special conditions. During the political crisis in 2024, he was freed from all punishment on 6 August. Since then she has been continuously undergoing treatment between hospital and home.
