The campaign for the by-elections for 12 wards of Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) to be held on November 30 ended on Friday. This has set the stage for the first major electoral challenge for the ruling BJP. Earlier in the assembly elections held in February, BJP had won 48 out of 70 seats and formed the government in the capital after 27 years. For the ruling party, the results of the bypolls on December 3 will also show whether it has been able to strengthen its grip on the civic body, which it had ruled for three consecutive terms before AAP ousted it in 2022.
Battle for prestige of Shalimar Bagh B seat BJP
Out of the 12 MCD wards where elections are being held, 9 were earlier with BJP and three with AAP. It will be a battle of prestige for the BJP in seats like Shalimar Bagh B, where Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was a councilor before winning the assembly elections from the same assembly constituency. Similarly, Dwarka B constituency was vacated after BJP’s Kamaljit Sehrawat was elected to the Lok Sabha from the West Delhi seat.
Currently, BJP has 116 councilors in the 250-member MCD House, while AAP has 99, Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15 and Congress has 8. In the last MCD elections in 2022, AAP had won majority with 134 seats. BJP got 104 seats, while Congress got 9 seats. Independent candidates got three seats. Since the anti-defection law does not apply to MCD councillors, frequent defection in the last two years has changed the composition of the House.
