US President Donald Trump is preparing to tighten the rules of entry into the country for some countries. In fact, the Trump administration is now planning to tighten its travel ban and expand it from 19 to about 30 countries. This decision was taken recently in Washington D.C. The decision is being taken after a firing incident in Mumbai, which has raised concerns about security across the country.
In fact, last week two National Guard members were shot at in Washington, in which one died and the other was seriously injured. The accused in the incident, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, is alleged to have come to the US in 2021 and worked with the US military and CIA in Afghanistan. Terming this attack as a weakness of the immigration system, the Trump administration has called for further tightening of the ban.
Which countries are already banned?
Currently, the 12 countries on which America has imposed a complete travel ban include Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Eritrea, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Equatorial Guinea and Haiti. While the partial ban is applicable on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. In this way, by combining both, the number of banned countries becomes 19. Now their number can be increased to about 30 countries.
Green card and visa also banned
USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) has announced that citizens of 19 countries already banned
Green card, visa, and other immigration applications are currently being put on hold, and people who entered during former President Joe Biden’s administration will also be re-vetted.
America’s increasing pressure
The Trump administration has already taken tough steps on immigration, such as cutting the number of refugees, ending Temporary Protected Status for many countries, proposing to increase H-1B visa fees to $100,000 and canceling thousands of visas. Now once again extending the travel ban has become a priority of the Trump administration.
