A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the city of Hualien in Taiwan on Thursday. Apart from this, earthquakes occurred in Afghanistan and Manipur state of India. But there is no immediate report of any kind of damage. According to a statement from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of 4.1 magnitude occurred in Afghanistan late night. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a shallow depth of only 10 kilometers, due to which there is a possibility of aftershocks.
Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This occurs because the seismic waves generated by shallow earthquakes have to travel a shorter distance to reach the surface, causing greater ground vibration and potentially greater damage to structures and greater casualties.
earthquake in afghanistan
Earlier on December 15, another earthquake of magnitude 4.0 had struck the region at a depth of 22 km. According to the Red Cross, earthquakes occur frequently in Afghanistan, especially in the Hindu Kush region, which is located in a highly active seismic zone. The latest tremors come after a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on November 4.
27 people died due to earthquake
According to Afghan officials, at least 27 people were killed and hundreds were injured in that earthquake. CNN reported that the earthquake also damaged one of the country’s most prestigious mosques. The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, which increased its impact. Afghanistan’s seismic susceptibility is due to its location in the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
A major fault line also runs through parts of the country, including the Herat region. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) says Afghanistan remains extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides and seasonal floods. Frequent earthquakes worsen the situation for communities already reeling from decades of conflict and limited development, leaving them with the least capacity to withstand multiple aftershocks.
Earthquake of 2.9 magnitude hits Manipur
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of 2.9 magnitude occurred in Ukhrul, Manipur late night. According to information shared by NCS on Twitter, the earthquake occurred at 2:58 pm Indian time and its depth was about 35 kilometers. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Ukhrul, Manipur.
4.4 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar
Earlier, according to a statement from NCS, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude occurred in Myanmar on Thursday. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 100 km. There was an earthquake of 3.8 magnitude in Tibet late on Wednesday night. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 90 km. According to NCS, an earthquake of 3.4 magnitude occurred in Leh, Ladakh late on Tuesday night. According to information shared by NCS on Twitter, the earthquake occurred at 11:25 pm Indian time, with a magnitude of about 10 km.
