Dwarka city story: Dwarka is included in the four major pilgrimage sites of Hindu religion. Dwarka is known as the holy city of Lord Shri Krishna. This divine city is situated in the Kathiawar region of Gujarat, on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is said that Dwarka was lost in the ocean. There are many ancient stories behind its sinking into the sea. Two curses have been attributed to Dwarka’s sinking into the sea. Let us know what were these two curses and who gave them?
According to mythology, to save his subjects from the tyranny of Jarasandha, Lord Shri Krishna left Mathura and founded Dwarka, a divine city on the sea shore. It is believed that 36 years after the Mahabharata war, the city of Dwarka was drowned in the sea. After the victory of Pandavas and destruction of Kauravas in the Mahabharata war, Mother Gandhari cursed Lord Krishna.
Gandhari had given this curse to Lord Krishna
Mata Gandhari blamed Lord Krishna for the Mahabharata war. He cursed God and said that if I have worshiped Lord Shiva with true heart and devotion and followed my Pativrata Dharma, then just as my clan has been destroyed, in the same way your clan will also be destroyed in front of your eyes. It is believed that due to this curse of Gandhari, the Yadu dynasty was destroyed and Shri Krishna’s city of Dwarka drowned in the sea.
Another curse is said to be the reason for Dwarka sinking into the sea. Once upon a time, Maharishi Vishwamitra, Devarshi Narad and Rishi Kanva went to the city of Dwarka. There some boys of Yaduvansh insulted the sages. Those boys dressed Lord Krishna’s son Samb in the form of a woman and took him to the sages. The boys told the sages that this woman was pregnant. He asked the sages to tell through divine vision whether the fetus is a boy or a girl. When the sages realized that the boys were mocking them, they became angry.
The sages had also given the curse of destruction of Dwarka.
The sages cursed Samba that a pestle i.e. a big iron mace would emerge from her womb. The same pestle will become the reason for the destruction of the entire Yaduvansh. According to the curse of the sages, a pestle emerged from Samb’s womb. The people of Yaduvansh started fighting among themselves with that pestle. Then gradually the entire Yaduvansh came to an end. Lord Krishna’s elder brother Balram also left his body.
A hunter mistook Lord Krishna for a deer and shot him with an arrow while he was resting under a tree. Then Shri Krishna finished his leela and returned to his divine abode. When the Pandavas came to know about the destruction of Dwarka, Arjun reached Dwarka and brought the remaining family members of Shri Krishna with him to Indraprastha. As soon as they left Dwarka, the entire city of Dwarka drowned in the same sea.
