In the case of missing documents related to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Shekhawat said that the question is not where are the documents, but the question is why have they not been returned to the public archives till now?
Shekhawat also said that Nehru was the first Prime Minister of the country, the documents related to him are not private property but the heritage of the country and such important historical records are not anyone’s private property but are public archives, through which scholars, researchers, students and common citizens will be able to study the truth of Nehru’s era in a fair and transparent manner.
Sonia should return documents related to Nehru
Shekhawat also said that Jairam Ramesh should urge Sonia Gandhi to follow her written promise and return these documents to the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMMML). According to Shekhawat, in 2008, during the UPA government, these documents kept in 51 boxes belonging to the then Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) were returned to the Gandhi family under due process and the complete record and catalog of these documents is still safe.
Reminders in this regard were also sent in July 2025
Shekhawat said that making historical records public is not only an administrative but also a moral responsibility. He expressed hope that Sonia Gandhi will soon take positive steps in this matter. In fact, PMML had sent formal letters to Sonia Gandhi several times. After that, reminders were also sent in this regard in January and July 2025 also.
In response to a written question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the government had said that documents related to Nehru have not gone missing. After this, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh yesterday demanded an apology from the government. After the controversy erupted, the government has hit back at the Congress.
