Dhurandhar Explained: Why did the villain overpower the hero in Dhurandhar, in which films before Akshay Khanna did the villain overpower the hero?

December 17, 2025 by Uma Shankar

One of the reasons why the film Dhurandhar is in the news is Akshay Khanna’s role and acting. For the first time in a Hindi film, such a character of Lyari’s gangster Rehman Dacoit has been shown. It is no surprise that everyone is praising the transformation that Akshay Khanna has shown in this role. Akshay Khanna has now become an actor who gives a new attitude to the villain. The situation of social media is such that Dacoit Rehman has been considered the most important part of Dhurandhar. If he had not been there then the fate of the film would have been different. Whereas in the story of the film, Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazari is the main hero. But Akshay Khanna became the villain at the peak of popularity. Why did this happen? Why did a villain overpower a hero in this film? Let’s try to understand.

Along with this, we will talk about when in history and which villains overpowered the main hero in which films. What does it mean for the villain to dominate the hero? It is noteworthy that whenever any artist gets a chance, he wants to give his best performance. like those movies in history stalwart Same thing happened to me. Akshaye Khanna gave a tashan to Rehman Dacoit, his dance steps and Bahrain’s Yakhi Doos Doos Indi Khos Fasla (Fa9la) songs and tune made his personality even spicy.

No more underworld don, no more dacoit tension

However, there is no less fear or tension in the name Rehman Dacoit. Gangsters have been called don till now, but the gangster here calls himself a dacoit. This is his name among the common people. Being called a dacoit from don has its own story. As much as his history was full of cruelty, Akshaye Khanna has been given the opportunity to play it out openly. The excess and exaggeration are in his characterization only. Akshay has also added his extravagance to it. Whose flavor is visible on the screen. The chemistry and length of the characters could not be controlled in the film.

You will remember the film Chhava. The purpose of the story was to keep the bravery of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in focus, hence the role of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb was kept under control. As per the need, Aurangzeb would appear on the screen and issue orders and leave. It is a different matter that even in that small role, Akshay Khanna had wreaked havoc. Aditya Dhar Did neither control the chemistry and length of the characters in Dhurandhar nor guess what its outcome would be at the box office?

Rehman Dacoit vs Hamza Ali Mazari

In the film, Rehman Dacoit and Hamza Ali Mazari are two characters whose temperaments are shown to be completely different from each other. The real name of Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali is Jaskirat Singh Rangi. It has been told about him that he was in jail, his life has lost all meaning, but for the sake of his country, he is sent to Pakistan as a spy so that his life can be given a meaningful purpose. So far it is fine, but consider where the mistake was made in portraying this character.

Jaskirat Singh Rangi is very aggressive. Whenever he gets a chance, he does not miss bloodshed or firing. He is tall and his looks are also not ordinary but special. Can be recognized in the crowd. It is possible that the director’s motive behind giving a special look was to create style and buzz. Ranveer Singh had to capture two types of moods while playing this role. Firstly, that he can kill his enemies and secondly, that he has to remain in the gang of dacoit Rahman in such a way that no one suspects him. He has been successful in this.

In other roles he often appears scared. That means he is aggressive but he also has to be tolerant while conspiring against India. Ranveer has played both the roles well. Whereas Rehman Dacoit is a character who always remains in the same attitude. He is saddened by the death of his son but the aim of his life is to continue working on his plans as a gangster. This is where the director-writer unknowingly went wrong.

If you watch the whole movie carefully Ranveer Singh Wherever he stands scared, Rahman gets a chance to overplay, he remains in this special style throughout the film. The audience is very upset with Ranveer’s nervousness. Since the film is of commercial genre, it could have been a little funny and flirtatious instead of being serious. This would not have slowed down his performance, nor would the role of the villain overpower the role of the hero.

Popular Villains On Hindi Films

Memorable roles of Gabbar Singh, Shakal, Mogambo

Well, this is not the first time this has happened in any Hindi film. Pran, Shatrughan Sinha or Vinod Khanna have been such actors, who often overpowered the hero in the role of villain. All three artists have their own personalities. Shatrughan Sinha or Vinod Khanna came as the main hero in the later period, while Pran later started doing character roles. But the popularity of any villain starts with Sholay, when Amjad Khan comes as dacoit Gabbar Singh. Amjad was the newest actor in Sholay but gained the most popularity after the release of the film. Gabbar Singh’s dialogues and roles overshadowed all the actors of the film.

There are many stories of super villains, from the then dacoit Gabbar Singh to today’s dacoit Rehman. Later, the role of Shakal played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the film Shaan, had an impact on superstar Amitabh Bachchan too. In a way, Shakal was a dacoit within the city like Gabbar Singh in the jungles. What is that work in the world that Shakal cannot do? The dialogue kept repeating for a long time.

Apart from these, it is also impossible to forget Ajit – the whole city knows me by the name of Lion… Ajit, who spoke dialogues, had his own status. During this period, there were such actors who proved to be no less than heroes whenever they appeared on screen as a villain. He was- Amrish Puri. He set a new standard of villain by playing Pasha in Jackie Shroff’s Hero, Mogambo in Anil Kapoor’s Mr. India and Alkhaniranjan Sadhu in Rishi Kapoor’s Nagina.
