31 December: Baikuntha Ekadashi
Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls during the solar month of Dhanur in the Hindu calendar. The fast of Vaikuntha Ekadashi is fixed on the solar month, hence it is sometimes observed in the Margashirsha lunar month and sometimes in the Pausha lunar month. It is believed that on this day the door of Vaikuntha, which is the abode of Lord Vishnu, is open. The devotees who observe Ekadashi fast on this day attain heaven and are liberated from the cycle of birth and death.
