Nepal’s currency will soon be printed in China. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has given the contract for designing and printing of large denomination notes to China’s government company China Bank Note Printing and Minting Corporation. But meanwhile, the dispute between Nepal and India regarding the map of new notes has once again become heated.
Nepal Rastra Bank has awarded the contract to this Chinese security printing company to design, print and supply various NRs 50, NRs 500 and NRs 1,000 notes. According to officials, the company will have to supply the notes within nine months. This is the same company which had earlier printed Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes of Nepal.
Recently, NRB had also issued a letter of intent to the same company to design and print 430 million notes of Rs 1,000.
How different will the new Rs 1000 notes be from before?
The new NRs 1,000 note will be quite different from the previous one. Seven Lali Gurans, which is the national flower of Nepal, will be added to its front design. These seven flowers will symbolize the seven provinces of Nepal. Along with this, for the first time in this series, the current Governor Prof. The signature of Dr. Biswanath Paudel will be included. The design is not final yet. Printing will start only after approval by NRB.
Controversy again over new map, India expressed objection
But the real stir came when it was revealed that the new Rs 100 note issued by Nepal included a political map which showed Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as part of Nepal. India considers these areas as its integral part and calls this claim of Nepal a unilateral step. Nepal claims that according to the Sugauli Treaty of 1816, this area east of the Mahakali river belongs to Nepal. In 2020, the KP Sharma Oli government had got a new political map passed by the Parliament including these areas. Two years ago, Nepal had also issued coins of Rs 1 and Rs 2 with the same map.
