
India is going to chair the International Institute for Democracy and Election Assistance (International IDEA) for the first time. The Chief Election Commissioner will assume the Chairmanship of IDEA at the international IDEA Council of Member States meeting to be held in Stockholm, Sweden on December 03, 2025.
IDEA was established in the year 1995. India is its founding member. Presiding over this event is a matter of pride not only for India but for every voter of India. Here the Chief Election Commissioner will also present his views. This event is going to be held this year on December 03, 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Gyanesh Kumar will assume the post of president
Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar is scheduled to assume the post of President of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) on behalf of India in Stockholm, Sweden on December 3, 2025. International IDEA has had observer status in the United Nations General Assembly since 2003.
As the world’s largest democracy with over 90 crore electors, India’s role as Chair of International IDEA for 2026 will draw on its unique experience in electoral administration to help strengthen election management bodies (EMBs) around the world.

International IDEA was established in the year 1995. An intergovernmental organization committed to strengthening democratic institutions and processes around the world. There are currently 35 members in this organization. Along with this, America and Japan are there as observers. This organization promotes inclusive, strong and accountable democracies. India is its founding member.
Under the leadership of the Chief Election Commissioner, IDEA and ECI will work together to document and disseminate internationally ECI’s technical and administrative innovations and best practices.
