There is going to be a big deal for BrahMos missile between India and Indonesia. Both countries are close to finalizing the deal for BrahMos missiles worth about US $ 450 million. The talks took place last Thursday at the third India-Indonesia Defense Ministers’ meeting, which was chaired by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Indonesian Defense Minister Syafri Syamsuddin.
Negotiations completed regarding the deal
After this deal, Indonesia will become the second South-East Asian country after the Philippines to purchase the BrahMos missile system. All negotiations between New Delhi and Jakarta regarding this deal have been completed. Now only Moscow’s formal approval is required, because Russia has 49.5 percent stake in the BrahMos joint venture.
BrahMos will be deployed all around China
Philippines has purchased BrahMos missile from India in the year 2022. Now Indonesia is doing a deal worth 450 million dollars. Vietnam also wants to buy BrahMos worth $700 million from India. This deal can also happen at the end of this year. If this happens, then China will have this missile above Russia, below Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines. India already has this missile deployed.
Why is this deal important?
Gaurav Kumar, researcher at the Indian defense think-tank United Service Institution of India, said about the deal being made between India and Indonesia, this is not just a normal arms deal. This is India’s strategic entry into a region (South-East Asia) where for a long time America has been imposing hard military power and China’s coercive policy has been creating boundaries.
This BrahMos agreement with Indonesia follows the Philippines’ $375 million purchase in 2022, delivery of which began last year. It is believed that Vietnam is also negotiating possible deals worth about $700 million. According to Kumar, these steps indicate that India is emerging as a new defense partner in South-East Asia.
