Contested assembly elections for the first time in 1990
Dr. Prem Kumar is one of the most powerful leaders of Bihar BJP. He has won the elections from Gaya City Assembly seat 9 times consecutively. Considering his seniority and understanding of parliamentary rules, the NDA has expressed confidence in him. 70 year old BJP MLA Prem Kumar is MA, LLB, PhD. He contested the assembly elections for the first time in 1990 and started his political innings by defeating Congress candidate Jai Kumar Palit. Then 35 years passed, his rivals kept changing, but no one could defeat him.
The seat dominated by Congress has been captured
Prem Kumar belongs to an extremely backward caste and the caste equation of Gaya Town Assembly constituency is favorable for Prem Kumar. He is considered to have a good influence in the Vaishya community. Like other places, Gaya Town assembly seat was also dominated by Congress till 1980-85. In 1990, this dominance was broken by Dr. Prem Kumar. This was the period when Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to establish its existence in Bihar. Then once Gaya Town area belonged to BJP, Dr. Prem Kumar and his party became synonymous with each other. Neither the party ever changed its candidate there nor did the public change its MLA.
