Big decision of Maharashtra government, birth certificates made through Aadhaar will be cancelled, hence step had to be taken

November 28, 2025 by Uma Shankar

To crack down on the increasing fraud of birth and death certificates, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has ordered a statewide action. Instructions have been given to immediately cancel all suspicious certificates issued on the basis of Aadhaar card and lodge an FIR with the police against the concerned persons. The Revenue Department has sent 16-point detailed guidelines in this regard to all District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Officers and Tehsildars.

It is clearly stated in the circular that as per the rules of the Central Government, Aadhaar card cannot be considered as the sole proof of date of birth or birthplace. In the instructions given by the Revenue Department, it has been said that after the amendment of August 11, 2023, all the birth/death registration orders issued by Naib Tehsildars will be cancelled. Certificates issued only on the basis of Aadhaar will be considered erroneous and will be cancelled.

If there is a difference in the date of birth in the application and Aadhaar card, an immediate FIR will be lodged. Beneficiaries who do not submit fake certificates or are missing will be declared absconding. Special verification camps will be organized under the supervision of District Magistrate and Divisional Commissioners.

Special surveillance in 14 districts

Amravati, Akola, Sillod, Sambhajinagar city, Latur, Anjangaon Surji, Achalpur, Pusad, Parbhani, Beed, Gevrai, Jalna, Ardhapur and Parli have been declared hotspots and strict investigation has been started.

What is the Revenue Minister?

Fake birth and death certificates are being used to usurp government benefits, grab land and even threaten national security. Such rackets will not be tolerated. Aadhaar based birth certificate will be cancelled. An FIR will be lodged immediately on the difference in date of birth. Fake beneficiaries will be declared absconding. Special investigation campaign has been started in 14 districts.

Calling for strict action, Bawankule said fake birth and death certificates were being used to cheat the system and create serious problems. He said that the government will adopt zero-tolerance policy and take strict action against those involved in this. According to him, this special drive will continue until all suspicious certificates issued after 2023 are scrutinized and canceled if found fake.
