India’s largest government power company NTPC has prepared a big plan to take the country’s power sector to new heights. The company has set a target of increasing its total power generation capacity to 244 gigawatt (GW) by the year 2037. NTPC will invest about Rs 7 lakh crore for this ambitious plan. This information was given by the company’s Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh in the recently organized lenders meet.
NTPC works under the Ministry of Energy of the Government of India and currently alone meets about 25 percent of the total power requirement of the country. The company produces electricity from thermal, solar, hydro and other green energy sources. At present, the total operational capacity of NTPC at group level is more than 85,000 MW, which makes it the largest power generating company in the country.
First big target till 2032, then jump to 2037
NTPC has divided its future plans into phases. The first target of the company is to take its power generation capacity to 149 GW by the year 2032. After this, in the next five years it will be increased rapidly to 244 GW by 2037. At present, about 32 GW capacity of the company is under construction under different projects, which will become operational in the coming years.
Increasing focus on green energy
NTPC no longer wants to be limited to power generation based only on coal. The company is rapidly moving towards renewable energy. Recently, 359.58 MW electricity has been added to the grid from the solar projects of its subsidiaries in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It is clear from this that in the coming times, NTPC’s major focus will be on clean and sustainable energy.
NTPC’s Rs 7 lakh crore investment plan is not limited to power generation only. The company will also make big investments in energy storage systems, pumped storage projects, nuclear power, green hydrogen and related chemical projects. Its objective is to meet the future increasing electricity demand in a stable and reliable manner, especially as the share of renewable energy continues to increase.
Rajasthan’s Nokh Solar Project also completed
Meanwhile, NTPC has also commercially started the last phase of Nokh Solar PV Project located in Bikaner district of Rajasthan. Under this project, 245 MW capacity is being developed, out of which the last 78 MW unit has become operational from 18 December 2025. After this, NTPC’s standalone capacity has reached 60,783 MW and group level capacity has reached 85,259 MW.
This long plan of NTPC is not just a story of numbers. This means more electricity in the future, less cuts, promotion of green energy and strengthening the energy security of the country. Besides, this will also create new employment opportunities and India will take stronger steps towards self-reliant energy.
