December 1, 2025 by Uma Shankar

Bangladesh court has convicted ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a case for the third time in a month. Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to 5 years in corruption case related to Dhaka’s New Town project. Sheikh Hasina’s sister Rehana and her niece Tulip Siddiqui have also been convicted in this case.

According to Bangladeshi media Pratham Aalo, Tulip has been sentenced to 2 years in prison and her mother Rehana has been sentenced to 7 years in prison. Tulip is a British MP. When he was accused of this case in 2024, he had to leave the post of minister in the government.

Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to a total of 26 years

Bangladesh court has so far sentenced Sheikh Hasina to 26 years of imprisonment. Apart from this, he has also received death sentence from the court in a decision. More than 100 cases against Sheikh Hasina are pending in different courts of Bangladesh. Hasina has been accused of genocide, misuse of power and corruption.

According to Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, if Sheikh Hasina had given up her attachment to Dhaka after being ousted, no action would have been taken against her. Even after leaving power, Sheikh Hasina is active in politics, which the people of Bangladesh will not accept.

Political stir due to Tulip’s punishment

The manner in which the Bangladesh court has sentenced Tulip Siddiqui to 2 years imprisonment has created a political stir. Tulip is an MP of Britain and her party is in government there. Recently Tulip had accused the interim government of Bangladesh of retaliation.

Tulip says that the cases registered against her have no merit. Neither the Bangladesh government is listening to their side nor providing them evidence.

Five famous lawyers of Britain had also written a letter to the government of Bangladesh regarding Tulip. These lawyers said that the way Tulip is being targeted is wrong.
