Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attacked Congress on the occasion of the inauguration of the new terminal of Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. PM Modi had alleged that at the time of partition, Congress wanted to hand over Assam to Pakistan. On Sunday, Congress MP Manickam Tagore rejected PM Modi’s claim and said that this claim is historically wrong.

He said that there was no proposal to hand over Assam to Pakistan. Assam was a Hindu-majority province and was never earmarked for Pakistan under the partition plan.
Manikam Tagore said this on PM’s allegation
Manickam Tagore said that the question was only on Sylhet district of Assam, which is a Muslim-majority area. In July 1947, under the British government, a referendum took place.

He said that in that referendum, Sylhet had voted to join East Bengal (East Pakistan). This was not a decision of Congress, but a vote taken before independence.
Manickam Tagore said that Karimganj subdivision was kept in India due to the efforts of Congress Chief Minister of Assam Gopinath Bordoloi. This is recorded in history.
No historical evidence for claim
He said that there is no historical evidence that Congress as a party had conspired to hand over Assam to Pakistan. Partition happened because the British government acted hurriedly and the Muslim League was demanding it. If partition had not taken place, there was a fear of civil war in the country.
Manickam Tagore said that turning a difficult, tragic history into a campaign slogan is an insult to the facts, the freedom fighters and Assam itself. Lies should be stopped but how will the Sanghis do this, because the one who spreads them lives on lies?
