The Indian Army has started the process of inducting indigenously made 9mm pistols. This weapon is currently imported in large numbers and is used by infantry soldiers, commanding officers and senior field commanders.
For this, the Defense Ministry has issued Request for Information (RFI) under DAP-2020. Under this proposal, the Army is planning to purchase about one lakh 9 mm pistols and the entire accessory package associated with them.
Very important as a secondary weapon
Pistol is considered very important as a secondary weapon in modern warfare. Especially in close-quarter combat, anti-terrorist operations and urban warfare, where encounters take place at very close quarters. Pistols often prove to be the last or back-up weapon for soldiers deployed in forests, densely populated areas and high-threat areas.
Suitable for all types of terrain
The Army has made it clear that the new pistol should be capable of working in all types of terrains of India. This includes everything from the desert and plains of the western border to the 18 thousand feet high hilly areas of the north and east. The weapon will have to operate reliably in temperatures ranging from 30 degrees to +55 degrees Celsius, both day and night.
modular design pistol
The Army wants a pistol with modular design, so that it can be upgraded in future without major changes. Besides, the pistol should also have the facility to install modern accessories like red dot sight, laser, suppressor, tactical holster and lanyard.
Emphasis on strength, reliable performance and maintenance
In RFI, special emphasis has been laid on the strength of the weapon, reliable performance and easy maintenance. Complete information about barrel life, accuracy, corrosion protection, ability to work in water and safety features has been sought from the companies. Apart from this, spare parts, repair facilities and field level repairs will also be important conditions.
Roadmap for indigenization sought from companies
Under Make in India and Self-reliant India, the Army has also asked for a complete roadmap for indigenization from the companies. This includes information about indigenous content, intellectual property rights, manufacturing license in India and technology transfer if needed.
Less dependence on foreign weapons
According to sources, Request for Proposal (RFP) can be issued by the end of this year. This procurement is part of the army’s larger plan to modernize its infantry and close-combat equipment, which aims to reduce dependence on foreign weapons.
