Taking a big step in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Indian Army has today launched AI Handbook for Military Leaders. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh released this handbook. Its objective is to prepare military commanders at all levels for the coming AI-based battlefield.
The purpose of the handbook is not just to acquire AI technology, but to explain to military leaders how to adopt it responsibly and wisely. In this handbook, the concepts of AI and machine learning are explained in simple language. It has also been told that AI is not just automation, but has capabilities much beyond that.
The guide offers a clear framework for the use of AI in multiple areas of military operations, such as command, control, coordination, communications, combat systems, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and autonomous platforms.
Priority to human control, ethics and safety
The handbook also pays special attention to the risks and limitations of AI. It states that human control will be essential in any lethal military decision. The challenges of data bias, system failure and AI cannot be ignored. All AI-based military systems must comply with international humanitarian law.
What needs to be done for AI-driven war?
The final part of the handbook provides a practical roadmap for the Indian Army. It says that for effective adoption of AI, strong leadership, understanding of AI, reliable and big data systems and new military doctrine are very important.
Introduction of AI culture in Indian Army
The launch of this handbook is being considered as the beginning of a major cultural change within the Indian Army. This step shows that the Army is now moving rapidly towards creating a technology-driven, AI-ready force.
