Why did Trump take action?
The latest crackdown on migrants by the Donald Trump administration comes after an Afghan national, identified as Rahmanullah Lakhanwal, opened fire on two guards just a few blocks from the White House on Wednesday, November 26. According to Reuters, one of them, 20-year-old Army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, died, while 24-year-old US Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe is still in critical condition.
Trump adopted a tough stance
Responding to the incident, Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his administration would impose a permanent ban on immigrants from all Third World countries to give the US system time to fully reset. He also said that the US will stop federal benefits and subsidies given to non-citizens present inside the country.
Meanwhile, USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said that following Trump’s directive, he has ordered a comprehensive and thorough review of green card applications of all individuals coming from countries of concern.
In another post, Edlow wrote on Twitter, “At the direction of POTUS, I have directed a complete, rigorous re-examination of every green card of every alien coming from every country of concern.” In addition to the crackdown on green cards, the Trump administration has issued new guidance that could include country-specific factors in screening foreigners coming from 19 high-risk countries.
