The recent talks between Taliban and Pakistan in Saudi Arabia have also been inconclusive. According to Afghanistan International sources, a Taliban delegation had gone to Saudi Arabia to talk to Pakistani officials, but no concrete results emerged. This is the third time when talks between both sides have proved ineffective. Saudi Arabia had already announced that it was ready to mediate between Taliban and Pakistan.
However, no official comment has come from the Taliban on this meeting yet. According to sources, the Taliban delegation included Deputy Minister of Interior Rahmatullah Najeeb, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi and senior member of the Taliban administration Anas Haqqani.
Previous talks also failed
This meeting, held in Saudi Arabia, came after the second and third talks held in Istanbul. The talks held in Istanbul also did not reach any result. Qatar and Turkey had previously hosted three rounds of mediation talks. The first meeting of these three rounds was held in Doha, in which both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday that the Istanbul talks did not yield any results. He said that some sections of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies and army were obstructing the talks and making excuses to strain relations.
Why was Saudi mediation important?
This meeting, brokered by Saudi Arabia, was important because it was expected to take the dialogue process forward between the two sides. But due to continuous failed efforts, questions are being raised on the level of trust between the two countries. Experts believe that the failure of talks between Pakistan and Taliban can affect regional stability and security situation in Afghanistan. Apart from this, the international community is also keeping an eye on the results of this talks.
What will happen next now?
The status of talks between Taliban and Pakistan remains uncertain at present. Experts say that the role of mediator countries Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye will be important. It will be challenging to restore trust between the two sides and get results from the talks. So far, the Taliban has not given any official statement on the meeting held in Saudi Arabia, due to which speculations and discussions in the media continue.
