The British government is preparing to take a big step regarding the online safety of children. According to reports, Apple and Google may be asked to prevent viewing and sharing of adult images without age verification on iOS and Android devices. This proposal can be brought under the online safety rules of UK. If this rule is implemented, it will be a major regulatory change for tech companies.
UK government may make new rules
According to the Financial Times report, the UK government can talk to Apple and Google so that controls can be implemented at the device level. Under this, users cannot view or share adult photos until their age is verified. This rule can apply to both iOS and Android platforms. However, official confirmation has not been made yet by the government.
Why is the pressure on age verification increasing?
Age verification is currently a big issue in the global tech industry. Companies like Meta already want Google and Apple to handle this responsibility on their platforms. Recently, Australia has started implementing social media ban for children under 16 years of age, due to which the discussion of strict rules has intensified in other countries including UK.
The proposal is related to Online Safety Act
According to the report, this UK proposal will work in conjunction with the Online Safety Act. Under current law, age verification is mandatory for websites and apps that display pornography. UK regulator Ofcom has clearly said that merely saying that the user is above 18 years of age will no longer be enough. This indicates that the strictness may increase further in the coming time.
What do Apple and Google say
Till now Apple and Google have not confirmed that any formal talks are going on with the government on this issue. According to the Financial Times, this policy is currently under consideration. If implemented, this will be the first time that age verification will be made mandatory for adult content at the device level. This can impact both user privacy and the responsibility of tech companies.
