Major action has been taken by the Punjab government after the violent protests by contact employees of Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) in different areas of Punjab on Friday regarding their demands. The government has taken strict action against the ongoing strike in Punjab to protest against the cancellation of the tender of Kilometer Scheme buses and has suspended all the employees involved in the strike.
The department has sent a mail to all the contract employees informing them about the action in this regard. It has been said in the mail that the employees have caused financial loss to the state government by participating in the illegal strike. Fine has been imposed for not running buses on the route and all the concerned employees have been suspended from services with immediate effect.
Hundreds of passengers remained stranded on the spot
There was uproar at Ludhiana bus stand on Friday morning. Here, contractual employees of Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) protested, due to which operations were stopped for about three hours and hundreds of passengers were stranded. This fierce protest took place after several senior union leaders were allegedly detained on Friday morning. The workers closed the gates of the bus stand and clashed with the police officers who were trying to open them. To show their displeasure, they even climbed a nearby water tank.
What was said in the tender?
This protest caused a lot of trouble in the entire district. Buses were off the roads since 5 am, causing significant delays to office goers, students and daily commuters. This movement was done against the opening of tender for the kilometer scheme. Under the tender, private contractors can run buses and only conductors will be hired from the roadways workforce. The tenders were to be opened on Friday, just hours after the union leaders were detained.
