After meeting the Chief Election Commissioner amid the ongoing SIR process in West Bengal and the death of several BLOs, senior TMC MP Derek O’Brien said that we raised 5 issues but the Election Commission did not answer any of our questions. His hands are stained with blood. He also said that we want to win elections in West Bengal on the lines of Bihar, but we will not let this happen. Before this, the delegation had a meeting with the Election Commission in Delhi for about 2 hours.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) is opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of voter list in West Bengal. The TMC delegation met the Election Commission on Friday to protest against the process and the death of the Booth Level Officer (BLO) involved in the SIR process.
Another TMC MP Derek O’Brien said after the meeting, “10 Trinamool Congress MPs met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his team. We first handed them the list of about 40 dead people due to the SIR process. We started the meeting by saying that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission have their hands stained with blood.”
We did not get answers to the questions: Derek
Derek O’Brien continued, “We asked five questions and we didn’t get answers to any of our five questions. This is the outline of what happened.”

Accusing the SIR of being conducted without any planning, MP Derek said that we are not against the constitutional process of SIR, but we have opposed the process being carried out in a ruthless manner without any special planning. He alleged that they want to win elections in West Bengal on the lines of Bihar but we will not let this happen.
There are already many arrangements, then why SIR: Mahua
After meeting the Election Commission, TMC MP Mahua Moitra said that the Commission told that someone’s name will be removed from the voter list only for four reasons. According to the Commission, names of voters who have died, people who have migrated permanently, duplicate voters and non-citizens will be removed from the voting list.
Mahua said that we raised this question before the Commission that when there is already a rule of Form-7, then what is the need for it to remove the names of dead voters. Similarly, there is already Form-8 for removing the names of those who have migrated permanently, whereas they do not have de-duplication software to identify duplicate voters, so how will they identify them?
BJP has also met the Commission
Regarding the 40 people killed, Mahua said, “Out of the list of 40 dead people we gave to the Election Commission, 18 people were BLOs, who died due to the SIR process, but we were very surprised that the Chief Election Commissioner had no information about this.
This is the first meeting of Trinamool Congress leaders with the Election Commission during the ongoing SIR process in West Bengal. On behalf of Trinamool Congress, MPs Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, Derek O’Brien, Shatabdi Roy, Dola Sen, Sajda Ahmed, Pratima Mandal, Mamta Thakur, Saket Gokhale and Prakash Chik attended the meeting.
Earlier on Wednesday, a delegation from the West Bengal unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had met the Election Commission on the issue of SIR.
